Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga National Park in Assam implemented a CCTV surveillance system to enhance safety and monitoring within its premises. The project focused on tracking vehicular movement across animal corridors while ensuring better oversight of ecological and visitor-sensitive zones. This initiative aimed to strengthen both conservation efforts and visitor management.

Challenges

Challenges

  • The geography of the park, including thick forest areas and irregular landscapes, posed logistical challenges for cabling, camera placement, and equipment maintenance.
  • Installation had to be done without disturbing the habitat or behavior of animals, especially around the corridors used by wildlife to cross roads.
  • Managing vehicular movement along NH-37, which cuts through animal crossing points, required a system that could function accurately in real-time and under varying weather conditions.
Solutions

Solutions

  • 72 CCTV cameras (24 IP thermal-based cameras for detecting wildlife movement, 12 ANPR cameras for monitoring vehicle speed and identification, and 36 IP optical cameras for visual monitoring) were installed across key areas, including security gates, parking lots, animal corridors, the entrance, and visitor canteens.
  • Six animal corridor sections on NH-37 were fitted with sensor-based vehicle speed regulatory systems.
  • Equipment was tailored to meet the specific needs of the park, keeping in mind low visibility conditions, varying terrain, and environmental sensitivity.

Results

Improved monitoring of sensitive wildlife zones and visitor movement.

Reduced risk of animal-vehicle collisions along the corridor zones.

A visible security presence that helped deter trespassing and unsafe practices.

Better traffic discipline on NH-37 with speed management measures in place.
